Technology Law Goes Too Far

Jun. 2, 2003

Over the past few years the safety of our personal information has become quite a big debate. Even Congress is getting in on the act! But do they really understand what they are getting into? Many times Congress passes laws without fully understanding the consequences of those laws.

For example, eight states are currently proposing a law that forbids "the use of any technology that conceals the existence or place of origin or destination of any communication" (see eWeek). What this means is that many places would not be allowed to use their router any more. A router, simply stated, is a device that allows many computers to come through a single connection. All of the computers look like a single device to the outside world, which is in violation of the above mentioned law. Say goodbye to your Internet connection in these states!

According to the eWeek article, "Most legislative bodies routinely fail to understand the requirements of practical system administration". The old saying 'never judge a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes' stands true. Until next time!
